The following contains some configuration that may prove useful if you plan to use the sounds & music or have a 286 computer. ** ** ** NOTES FOR 286 USERS ** ** ** If you have a 286 computer with only 2 megabytes of RAM, a Sound Card, and a S-VGA monitor running in 256 color mode, you are likely to get an out-of-memory error ("Exec Format Error"), when trying to load Crosswords. You can fix this problem by disabling the sound drivers (located in the "Drivers" section of the Control Panel); or by changing your display to 16 color by selecting "VGA" from the "Windows Setup" section located in the "Main" folder (NOTE: Your computer will run much faster in 16 color mode). ** ** ** NOTES ON MUSIC ** ** ** IMPORTANT NOTE! Music & Sound effects are only available when running Windows 3.1 or higher, or when using Windows 3.0 with Multimedia extensions. CUSTOMIZING WINDOWS TO PERFORM BETTER WHEN USING SOUND CARDS After you have set up your system to accommodate music & sound effects (as outlined in your Windows manual), you may wish to tailor your system to perform better. The following paragraphs explain how to get the best quality music on the two most popular sound cards (if you don't have one of these two cards, the music will still play fine, it just won't take advantage of specialized features indigenous to those cards): USING AN ADLIB COMPATIBLE SOUND CARD (Adlib, Sound Blaster, Thunder Board, etc.) In order to select the Enhanced Adlib Music, select "Adlib General" option from the MIDI Mapper located in the "Control Panel" section of the "Main" file folder. Please note this is different from the "Adlib" setting and gives substantially better results. NOTE: Most software supports this option, and you shouldn't have to switch it back. USING A ROLAND MT-32 OR LAPC-1 SOUND CARD (OR COMPATIBLE) Because Windows does not fully support all the extra features and sounds of the Roland cards in the default Windows settings, we have included two different versions of music for Roland users. The first one (which is default on Crosswords), will play fine in conjunction with the default Windows setting. However, if you want to hear the Enhanced Roland Music you must reconfigure Windows as outlined below. CONFIGURING THE MIDI MAPPER FOR ENHANCED ROLAND MUSIC The following represents the steps needed to configure Windows to play Enhanced Roland Music. Please be aware that this is an advanced option and should only be attempted by those that are comfortable with Windows configuration. Additionally, please note that when using other software not supporting this feature, you must select the "LAPC-1" or "MT-32" option from the MIDI Mapper for the other music to play correctly (you won't, however, have to reconfigure the Enhanced Roland, you will only have to re-select it from the MIDI Mapper). IMPORTANT: Never play Roland Enhanced Music without first configuring the MIDI Mapper accordingly. 1) Enter the MIDI Mapper from the Program Manager (located in the "Control Panel" section of the "Main" file folder. 2) Select "New" and type in the name "Enhanced Roland" (you can ignore the description), and click on "OK". 3) The "MIDI Setup" screen will be shown, and you must then reassign the destination channels (Dest Chan) as follows: Src Chan Dest Chan 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 5 6 6 7 7 8 8 9 IMPORTANT! Do not configure any other channels! 4) Then you must configure the "Port Name" to "Roland MPU- 401" (by selecting the pull-down menu by clicking on the down-arrow button located on the right side of the active "Port Name"). The source channels that must be configured are: Src Chan 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 IMPORTANT! Do not configure any other channels! 5) Then click on "OK" indicating you are finished with the setup. Click again on "OK" when Windows asks if you want to save the new setup. 6) Click on "Close" to exit from the MIDI Mapper (don't double-click on the upper left-hand close icon, as it won't save your configuration). 7) Enter Take A Break Crosswords and select "Roland Enhanced Music" from the "Sound" pull-down menu, and enjoy!
